The egg in hair care and the history of product development

Egg yolk in hair care has been written about since the 11th century. Still in modern times, people use egg yolk to treat dry and damaged hair.

Read about all the good things egg yolk does for hair in this blog. At the end of the blog, I give a recipe for a natural hair mask to give your hair more strength and softness.

The author of the blog is Mari Tiira, the founder of Elsa Ecopaja

How did S silkkitipu chunk shampoo come about and why is it called: Silktipu chunk shampoo?

Silktipu chunk shampoo combines two objects of my passion:

Natural well-being of hair and skin and love for chickens and especially sweet Silky chickens.

The egg yolk contains proteins that strengthen the hair root and shaft, and add shine to the hair.
In addition, the proteins and iron contained in the yolk stimulate hair growth.

Even before the idea of Elsa's Ekopaja started to take shape, I had started my long-term dream with my husband Peka. For a year now, I had been hoping for a small domestic chicken on our plot. There was a lot involved in building the chicken coop and selecting the breed of chickens, which led to the birth of this wonderful shampoo that adds shine, fluffiness and softness.

Childhood pranks

My love for chickens had already started as a child. When I was in elementary school, I had a friend who played the violin and lived in the country. They had a production line. In the summer, I was able to visit this guy. Together we visited the chickadee on the top of the barn, where hundreds of tiny chickadees traveled like a yellow sea of chickadees, forming beeping and sweet waves, protecting each other. This sight has remained in my mind forever.

Sea of drops

The yolk is rich in fat and therefore improves the softness of the hair. 100g of egg yolk contains approx. 27g of fat.
Yolks contain a very special fat, lecithin.
Lecithin makes hair flexible and shiny. Lecithin improves hair structure. It keeps the hair moisturized and helps restore the hair's natural protective layer. This way, your hair is naturally soft, without silicones clogging hair pores.

The first drops in 1982

One Easter, when I was nine years old, my grandfather, i.e. Kaltsu-pappa, wanted to cheer up me and my older sister Sirku's Easter. In Heinola, in the 1980s, there was a pet shop on Siltakattu, almost opposite the shop where the first Elsa Ekopaja was founded. The store had borrowed chicks from the chicken farm, which the customers could take care of during Easter.

We set off together in Kaltsu-papa's Lada to pick up three chicks for us to take care of at grandma's for Easter. I will always remember when we arrived at the parking lot, and the chicken farmer was just lifting a cardboard box containing chicks from his car, when the box fell onto the road, and the chicks spread across Siltakatu in a panic. Papa and I rushed after the chicks and tried to stop the traffic at the same time. In the end, everything ended happily and the chicks were safely delivered to the pet store.

Little chicks in 1982

So we received three small, yellow chicks. We spent an unforgettable Easter taking care of these sweet beeping balls.

Because eggs contain a variety of vitamins, including vitamins A and E, biotin, and folate, they help moisturize your hair and give it vitality .

Chicken fever is growing

My chicken fever grew over the years whenever we visited farmyards or places where chickens were kept. The only missing component to making my chicken dream come true was the building itself, i.e. the chicken.

It had been a year and a half since Elsa's death, when in the fall of '20 I had infected my husband Pekka with chicken fever. In the middle of watching TV, he jumped up from the sofa and announced that now we are going to build a chicken coop.

Construction of the channel

Construction would not be difficult, after all, Pekka had studied the profession of a house builder in his youth. We decided to follow our own, ecological principles, and to purchase building materials from surplus and used ones as well. My task was to go through Tor and Facebook notifications and together we drove to get supplies. We got the walls and roof in place in the building, before the winter's snow cover stopped construction until spring.

In the spring, chicken fever hit so hard that the chicken had to be finished quickly after the snow closed. The little chicks first moved in with us, and lived in the used aquarium to grow, while finishing the chicken coop was completed.

A chicken named Mari?

Choice of chicken breed

The breed of chickens was something that was thought about for a long time. Of course, we had heard good things about country breeds, which can withstand the Finnish winter well and are very hardy types anyway. On the other hand, I was completely in love with the silk chickens that I had seen in the petting zoos. Their soft, silky plumage and funny expressions had melted my heart. In addition, I knew that Silkies are excellent pet chickens that are easy to tame and like human touch and laps. My own lap had been left gapingly empty since Elsa died.

Mari Tiira and Hupu, the silk chicken

Fun facts about silk chickens:
-The skin and muscles of the silk chicken are black
-The silk chicken has five toes, instead of the normal four
- Silky hens' feathers are fluffy, and that's why silkies can't fly
-The silkie has blue ear lobes
- Silk chickens came to Europe from China with Marco Polo. They have long been used in Chinese medicine.

The selection of the breed came naturally with the development of the piece shampoo

This is related to the fact that during that winter I was also enthusiastic about soap making and started formulating recipesfor bar shampoos . I wanted to makea bar shampoo for myself, suitable for my own hair type. I have dry and rough, naturally curly hair. The curls have always been overly fluffy and rough, and didn't settle down very nicely. In addition, I had dyed my hair for decades with harsh dyes containing chemicals, and the hair had become dull and lifeless. That's also why I had kept my hairstyle short, because I was somehow trying to make my thinning hair look more voluminous. Elsa's birth, illness, death and the traumatic stress involved in it had also started to drip my hair, and it had thinned considerably, I could already feel how bald it was shining on my temple.

Effect of Silktipu chunk shampoo Mari Tiira

The situation with my hair was really challenging, but I was determined to try to solve all these problems with a properly formulatedhair shampoo . Thanks to the silk tipu shampoo , my hair has grown and strengthened and now my long hair looks wonderful.

Egg on the head, i.e. product development begins

I had heard that you could wash your hair with egg. I researched the topic more and realized that egg yolk could be beneficial for my lifeless curls. I realized that the egg yolk would strengthen and soften my hair, and perhaps also nourish the hair root and stimulate new hair growth.

Egg yolk not only soothes dry hair and adds shine, but it also increases hair's resistance to breakage and damage. Lutein is an antioxidant in eggs that helps strengthen and improve hair elasticity.
Yolk proteins help repair damaged keratin. Your hair, skin and nails are made up of keratin.

Eggs should therefore be included in the shampoo recipe. When I familiarized myself with the production of bar shampoo, I realized that egg could only be used in soap-basedbar shampoo . Since soap-based shampoos are made by combining fats and lye water together, the process removes all the impurities that the presence of egg in cosmetics requires. The yolk spoils quite easily, within a couple of days, unless it goes through this process. The traditional cold process method was therefore perfectly suited to making egg shampoo, and you wouldn't even need to add preservatives to the piece.

See on Elsa's Ecopaja YouTube channel why our customer Merkku fell in love with Silktipu's shampoo and conditioner.

Eggs are a great source of protein, vitamins and minerals that are essential for hair health. The B vitamins and biotin they contain strengthen the hair roots. Because eggs are rich in nutrients, they stimulate hair growth and increase thickness and volume

I had tested this recipe on my own hair. In addition to vegetable oils and egg yolk, the recipe also included beer. I noticed that the beer had also added shine to the hair. In this recipe, I was already quite satisfied with the result in my hair. The only thing still missing from the finished product was the PRODUCT NAME.

Testing

I had asked a few friends to try the soaps and shampoos I had formulated. My friend Taru was eager to try and give feedback. Taru fell in love with a piece of egg and beer. It instantly improved his coarse, shaggy hair. The hair became wonderfully clean and soft right from the first wash.

Watch the video on YouTube, where Taru and I reminisce about the time when I developed soap recipes and gave them to Taru to try.

Youtube

Taru and I played together with names: "Muna-kalja shampoo?" "Egg beer shampoo?" All these names mostly made me laugh.

Silk for hair

Then silk entered the picture. I wanted to test natural tussah silk for the recipe, which I had heard a lot of good things about. when I added more raw silk to the piece, it became perfect. My hair literally shone like the sun and felt strong, soft and looked shiny. My lifeless hair experienced a revolution and started forming beautiful corkscrew curls on its own. My hair started to grow again, down hairs appeared on my temples, and there were even less dead hairs left on my brush.

The last raw material, silk, also started to solve the problems related to naming the product.

I started thinking about the name of the product again: "Egg-cow-silk-shampoo?" "yolk egg silk shampoo?"

I slept for one night, and when I woke up everything was clear:

We should have silk chickens, because the name of the shampoo will be:

Silk tip piece shampoo !

So I was able to solve two riddles in one go. The breed of chickens, and the name of the shampoo.

How can you use the effects of egg on your hair at home?

  1. Eat eggs daily
  2. Use Silktipu shampoo to wash your hair
  3. Prepare a hair mask from an egg:

Instructions for the hair strengthening hair mask:

1.Mix 2-3 egg yolks with 2-3 drops of lemon juice to help reduce the "egg" smell of the mask.

2. Beat the mixture until frothy.

3.Apply to the hair by putting the egg mixture in your hands and work it into the hair.

4. Cover your hair with a shower cap. Leave it on for about 20 minutes. During this time, the egg mixture will dry out and feel sticky to the touch.

5.Rinse off the hair mask with cold or cool water. Rinsing with hot water can cause the egg to clump in the hair.

6.Wash your hair again with Silktipu piece shampoo and apply Silktipu piece conditioner to the ends.

7. Use this hair mask a few times a month to strengthen the hair-repairing properties of the Silktipu block shampoo and to revive hair growth.

Thank you for reading my writing.

Mari Tiira
